About the author

Berthe René is a Haitian immigrant who came to New York City at the age of 17 with her brothers and sisters. Ti Marie, My Sister My Slave is her debut memoir.

Berthe has a BA from Hunter College and taught French language and culture as an Adjunct at the CUNY colleges while pursuing a PhD degree in Comparative Literature at the Graduate and University Center. After moving to New Jersey, she became a high school French Teacher.

Now retired, she advocates for education and community development in Haiti through the Haitian Alliance for Community Action, Inc., an officially registered NGO in the USA and in Haiti under the name of Alliance Haitienne d’Action Communautaire.

She lives in Englewood, New Jersey near her two daughters and family.
